Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 52mm ND 0.6 (2stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 52mm ND 0.6 (2stops) Filter | Add motion with a two-stop exposure reduction
Without a neutral density filter, bright conditions can leave you choosing between a faster shutter and a narrower aperture. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND filter gives you another way to manage the light reaching your camera, so you can use a slower shutter speed or a wider aperture when the scene is bright. It’s suited to photographers who want more control over exposure for moving water, passing clouds or portraits in strong daylight. The effect is deliberately moderate: this filter reduces the light by two stops, rather than making a bright scene dramatically darker. That makes it useful when you want a small, controlled change to your exposure. It’s a straightforward option for photographers with a lens that takes a 52mm filter.
Make a small exposure change
A two-stop reduction gives you room to adjust shutter speed while keeping the rest of your exposure the same. For example, at the same aperture and ISO, a shutter speed of 1/125 sec can become about 1/30 sec. That can soften the movement of a stream or fountain without requiring a very long exposure. If you’re photographing a still subject, you can instead use the extra exposure room to choose a wider aperture. Keep an eye on movement in the frame: a slower shutter will blur moving subjects too.
Specialist Note
At a bright riverside, I’d use this filter to bring a 1/125 sec exposure down to around 1/30 sec while keeping the aperture and ISO unchanged. Its ND 0.6 rating means a two-stop reduction, a restrained amount that can soften moving water without turning the scene into a very long exposure. The 52mm size is the key detail when choosing it: it’s for a lens with a matching filter thread. I’d recommend it to someone who wants a simple way to control motion or gain a little aperture room in daylight. If you need a much longer shutter speed, two stops may not be enough on its own.
