Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 52mm ND 1.5 (5stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 52mm ND 1.5 (5stops) Filter | Five stops for longer exposures
Bright conditions can make it hard to use a slower shutter speed or a wider aperture without overexposing your shot. This Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND filter reduces the light reaching your camera by five stops, giving you more room to choose those settings. It’s a practical option for photographers who want to soften moving water or clouds, or keep a wider aperture in bright light. The 52mm size is for lenses with a matching 52mm filter thread. ND 1.5 is another way of describing its five-stop strength, so you can factor that reduction into your exposure. The filter’s appeal is straightforward: it gives you a substantial, predictable reduction in light. It won’t change the direction or quality of the light, and you’ll still need to set focus and exposure for the scene you’re photographing.
Putting five stops to work
Five stops means letting through 1/32 of the light that would reach the camera without the filter. That makes a noticeable difference to shutter speed: for example, a metered 1/30 sec exposure becomes roughly one second with the filter in place, assuming the scene and other settings stay the same. That longer exposure can blur movement, so use a steady camera support when you want stationary details to stay sharp. For a wider aperture in bright conditions, meter with the filter in place and adjust from there.
Specialist Note
“Will this let me turn a quick exposure into a long one?” Yes: the Firecrest’s five-stop reduction gives you a useful amount of extra exposure time without changing your chosen framing. The 52mm size is the key fit detail, so it’s for a lens with a 52mm filter thread. For moving water, if your reading without the filter is 1/30 sec, five stops takes that to about one second; use a tripod if you want the surrounding scene to remain crisp. I’d point this filter towards photographers who need that kind of control in bright conditions. It’s a fixed-strength filter, so you’ll need to adjust your settings if the scene calls for a different exposure.
