Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 52mm ND 1.8 (6stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 52mm ND 1.8 (6stops) Filter | Six-stop control for bright scenes
A defined six-stop reduction is what sets this Formatt Hitech Firecrest apart: it lets you use a slower shutter speed or a wider aperture when the available light would otherwise make those settings impractical. It’s a 52mm ND filter for photographers who want more control over exposure in bright conditions, especially when they’re deliberately aiming for motion blur or a shallower depth of field. The ND 1.8 rating describes the same six-stop reduction, so you can plan the exposure change rather than guessing at it. For example, a shutter speed of 1/30 second becomes about two seconds with six stops less light, a useful starting point for smoothing moving water when your composition is steady. The 52mm size is relevant to the lens’s filter thread; it’s the thread size, rather than the camera body, that determines whether the filter fits. This is a focused tool for controlling light, not a variable-strength filter.
Specialist Note
First-time ND users often leave the shutter speed unchanged and wonder why the picture has gone dark; with this ND 1.8 filter, think in six-stop steps and adjust exposure accordingly. That reduction gives you room to try a two-second exposure where you’d otherwise use 1/30 second, which can soften moving water if the camera stays still. I’d also consider it when you want a wider aperture in strong daylight, while keeping an eye on the exposure after fitting it. The 52mm diameter makes the lens thread the key detail for fit, so match that number to your lens. It’s a fixed-strength filter, so it won’t offer gradual adjustment between lighter and darker settings.
