Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 52mm ND 2.4 (8stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 52mm ND 2.4 (8stops) Filter | Eight-stop light reduction for longer exposures
The defining feature of the Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 52mm ND 2.4 (8stops) Filter is its strong, eight-stop reduction of incoming light. That makes it useful when you want a slower shutter speed in bright conditions, rather than letting the available light dictate a fast exposure. It suits photographers working with moving water, clouds or other motion they’d like to render with blur, and anyone who needs more control over exposure outdoors. The 52mm size is for a lens with a matching 52mm filter thread; it’s worth matching that size before choosing it for a lens. ND 2.4 describes the same eight-stop strength in a different form. This is a specific, substantial density, best suited to situations where a pronounced reduction is useful—not a subtle adjustment for every lighting condition.
Putting eight stops to work
For a practical sense of the effect, an exposure of 1/250 second without the filter becomes roughly one second with eight stops of light reduction, assuming the other exposure settings stay the same. That can turn moving water into a smoother, blurred surface or give clouds time to shift across a frame. The actual exposure will depend on the light and your chosen aperture and ISO, so take a reading and adjust from there.
Specialist Note
The Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 52mm ND 2.4 (8stops) Filter is best at giving you a much slower shutter speed in bright light. I’d point it towards landscape photographers who want movement in water or clouds to read as a soft blur, rather than a frozen instant. Its eight-stop reduction is a substantial change, so plan for a noticeably longer exposure; that’s the point, but it won’t suit every scene. The 52mm size means you’ll need a lens with a matching filter thread. For a stream or waterfall, meter the scene, fit the filter, then lengthen the shutter speed to capture the movement.
