Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 72mm ND 0.6 (2stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 72mm ND 0.6 (2stops) Filter | More control over exposure
Bright daylight can force you to choose between a fast shutter and the aperture you want. This neutral-density filter cuts the light reaching the camera, giving you more room to choose your exposure rather than letting bright conditions make the decision for you. It suits photographers who want to use a slower shutter speed in daylight, or keep a preferred aperture when the scene is bright. That makes it particularly useful for softening the movement of flowing water or capturing motion with a more deliberate feel. It can also help when you want to keep your framing and exposure approach consistent as the light changes. The filter’s role is straightforward: reduce incoming light so you can make those exposure choices. It’s a focused tool for situations where light is the constraint, rather than an effect filter intended to alter colour or add a look.
Specialist Note
Harsh light can leave you with no room to use the shutter speed you want; this filter gives you two stops of breathing space. ND 0.6 means a two-stop reduction, so as a simple guide, a 1/60 sec exposure can become 1/15 sec with the same aperture and ISO. That’s a practical starting point for bringing a little movement into a stream or waterfall. The 72mm size is the other detail to get right: it suits a lens with a matching 72mm filter thread, so check the marking on the lens. I’d recommend it to someone who wants a measured reduction in light, rather than a much stronger effect.
