Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 77mm ND 1.5 (5stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 77mm ND 1.5 (5stops) Filter | Five stops less light for longer exposures
Bright conditions can leave you choosing between a shutter speed that freezes everything and an aperture that’s smaller than you want. This Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND filter cuts the light reaching the camera by five stops, giving you room to make a longer exposure or use a wider aperture in brighter light. It’s a straightforward option for landscape photographers smoothing moving water, and for anyone who wants motion blur in daylight without changing the scene’s lighting. The ND 1.5 rating corresponds to that five-stop reduction, so you can account for it when setting exposure. A 77mm filter size makes it relevant to lenses that take 77mm filters; the size is important when choosing a filter for your setup. Its strength is a defined, substantial reduction rather than a subtle tweak, so it’s best when you already know you want a five-stop change.
Specialist Note
Five stops is a meaningful cut, so this isn’t the filter I’d suggest when you only need a tiny exposure adjustment. It’s a good fit when you want a clear, predictable change: the ND 1.5 rating means you can plan around five stops less light, rather than guessing at the effect. For a stream in daylight, for example, meter for 1/30 sec and the filter lets you work around a 1 sec exposure while keeping the same aperture and ISO. The 77mm size matters at the lens end, so match it to a lens with a 77mm filter thread. I’d recommend it to landscape photographers who want to make moving water look smoother without waiting for dimmer light.
