Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 82mm ND 1.8 (6stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 82mm ND 1.8 (6stops) Filter | Six stops less light for longer exposures
Without an ND filter, bright conditions can leave you choosing between a faster shutter speed and a smaller aperture. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 82mm ND 1.8 filter cuts the light reaching the camera by six stops, giving you more room to choose a slower shutter speed in daylight. It’s for photographers who want to control exposure when the available light would otherwise make a long exposure difficult. That makes it particularly useful for giving moving water a softer appearance, or for recording movement in clouds across a landscape. The six-stop reduction is strong enough to make a clear difference, but it isn’t an extreme light blocker; in very bright conditions, you may still need to adjust your aperture or ISO to get the exposure you want. Its 82mm size is the key fit detail: the lens needs to accept an 82mm filter.
Specialist Note
Six stops is a substantial cut in light, but it won’t make every daylight scene an ultra-long exposure; that’s the honest limit. I’d still recommend this one when you want a practical step towards slower shutter speeds without losing control of the rest of your exposure. For moving water, take your meter reading without the filter, then account for the six-stop reduction: an exposure of 1/60 second becomes about 1 second. The 82mm size also makes matching it to your lens straightforward, as long as that lens takes 82mm filters. It suits landscape photographers who want to show movement while keeping a deliberate exposure, rather than relying on a fast shutter in bright light.
