Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 82mm ND 2.4 (8stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 82mm ND 2.4 (8stops) Filter | Create long exposures in bright light
The defining choice is the 82mm diameter: this filter is made for lenses with a matching filter thread. Its ND 2.4 rating cuts the light by eight stops, giving you room to use a much slower shutter speed in bright conditions. That makes it useful for smoothing moving water, softening passing clouds or showing movement in a busy scene without waiting for dusk. It can also help when you want a wider aperture in strong daylight. The filter suits landscape photographers and anyone who wants deliberate motion blur rather than a frozen moment. Because the reduction is fixed at eight stops, it’s best when you know you want a pronounced change in exposure; it isn’t a subtle adjustment filter. Choose it for scenes where that strong light reduction is part of the picture you’re making.
Specialist Note
A stream is moving quickly in the midday sun, and this is where an eight-stop filter earns its place: you can lengthen the exposure enough to turn the water into a smooth flow. The ND 2.4 rating means a shutter speed of 1/250 sec becomes about one second, keeping aperture and ISO unchanged. Its 82mm size is for a lens with a matching filter thread, so it’s worth checking the thread size of the lens you plan to use. I’d recommend it to landscape photographers who want that clear, deliberate blur in bright light. One honest caveat: eight stops is a big reduction, so it’s too strong when you only want a small exposure change.
