Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 82mm ND 2.7 (9stops) Filter

Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 82mm ND 2.7 (9stops) Filter | Create long exposures in bright conditions

Moving water can become a smooth blur, while clouds gather streaks across the frame. This 82mm Formatt Hitech Firecrest neutral-density filter reduces incoming light by 9 stops, letting you use a much slower shutter speed without changing the scene’s lighting. It’s for photographers who want to control motion in daylight, or who need to work with a wider aperture when the light is strong. Its most convincing use is a deliberate long exposure: choose a subject with movement, keep the camera steady, and let the extended exposure record that motion. The filter’s 9-stop reduction is substantial, so it calls for considered exposure settings rather than a small adjustment. It’s a straightforward tool for shaping how time and movement appear in a photograph.

Working with a 9-stop filter

Nine stops means the filter passes 1/512 of the light that would reach the lens without it. As a practical guide, a shutter speed of 1/125 sec becomes about 4 sec with the same aperture and ISO. That can turn moving water into a soft sweep, or record cloud movement over a landscape. Use a steady support for multi-second exposures, and choose a scene where movement is part of the picture you want to make.
