Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 82mm ND 3 (10stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 82mm ND 3 (10stops) Filter | Create motion-blurred daylight exposures
To turn bright daylight into a long exposure that smooths moving water or gives clouds time to shift, the Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 82mm ND 3 (10stops) Filter cuts the light reaching your camera by ten stops. That substantial reduction lets you use a much slower shutter speed in conditions where an unfiltered exposure would otherwise be too fast to show movement. It also gives you room to use a wider aperture in bright light, if you want shallower depth of field without overexposing the image. This fixed-strength ND filter suits landscape photographers and anyone making deliberate motion blur outdoors. The 82mm size is the key fit detail: it’s intended for a lens that accepts an 82mm filter. Choose it for a pronounced long-exposure effect rather than a small exposure adjustment; ten stops is a strong reduction.
Planning the exposure
Set your composition and focus, then work out the shutter time you want before making the final exposure. Use your metered exposure without the filter as a starting point, and allow for the ten-stop reduction when calculating the slower shutter speed. A shorter exposure retains more texture in moving water; a longer one smooths it further. Review the result and adjust to suit the movement in the scene.
Specialist Note
Strong midday light can wipe out the slow shutter speed you need for moving water; this filter gives you a practical way around that without waiting for evening. With its 10-stop reduction, a metered 1/1000 sec exposure becomes roughly 1 sec with the filter in place, before fine-tuning for the scene. That’s a useful starting point for turning a choppy stream into a softer surface. The 82mm size matters when choosing a filter: match it to the filter size your lens accepts. I’d reserve this fixed, heavy reduction for deliberate long exposures; for modest shutter changes, it can be more than you need.
