Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 82mm ND 4.8 (16stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 82mm ND 4.8 (16stops) Filter | Make very long exposures in daylight
The defining choice here is the 82mm diameter: this filter is made for lenses with a matching filter size, rather than being a one-size-fits-all accessory. The Firecrest is a strong neutral-density filter, designed to cut the light reaching the camera so you can use much slower shutter speeds. That makes it especially suited to landscape photographers who want moving water to soften or clouds to shift across the frame, even when the daylight would otherwise call for a fast exposure. It can also help when you want motion blur in a scene without changing its framing. This level of light reduction calls for some planning: compose and focus before fitting the filter, then work out the longer exposure. If you regularly use lenses with an 82mm filter size, this gives you a focused tool for deliberate long exposures.
Specialist Note
Landscape photographers drawn to smooth water, blurred crowds or streaking clouds will get the most from this Firecrest. Its ND 4.8 rating corresponds to a 16-stop reduction, so a metered 1/125 sec exposure becomes roughly 8 minutes 44 seconds; that’s the kind of change that can turn ripples into a soft surface. The 82mm size makes it relevant specifically to lenses with that filter diameter, so it’s worth matching the filter to the lens you plan to use. I’d compose and focus first, then calculate and check the long exposure. The honest trade-off is time: a 16-stop cut is too strong for quick handheld shooting.
