Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 100x100mm Neutral Density 6.6 (22 Stops)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 100x100mm Neutral Density 6.6 (22 Stops) | Create dramatically longer exposures
Without a strong neutral density filter, a bright scene can leave you with a shutter speed that’s too fast for the movement you want to show. This Formatt Hitech filter cuts the light reaching the camera by 22 stops, giving you room to make exposures far longer than the available light would otherwise allow. It’s suited to landscape photographers and anyone working with deliberate motion blur: think smoothing moving water or letting clouds travel across a frame. You can also use a dense ND filter to work with a wider aperture in bright conditions, though the very large light reduction calls for careful exposure planning. Its 100x100mm format is for photographers working with square filters. The appeal here is specific: a very strong light cut when ordinary exposure settings won’t give you the long shutter time you want.
Specialist Note
A 22-stop reduction is a serious limitation as well as the reason to choose this filter: composing and focusing after it’s in place can be difficult, and exposure times grow quickly. I’d frame, focus and meter first, then calculate the longer exposure. For perspective, a metered 1/8000 sec exposure becomes about 8 minutes 44 seconds after adding 22 stops. That makes this filter useful for smoothing moving water or recording cloud movement in bright conditions, provided you plan the timing carefully. The 100x100mm square format is worth factoring into your setup, while the 6.6 density tells you just how far this filter is intended to push shutter times.
