Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 100x150mm ND Soft Edge Grad 0.3 (1 Stop)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 100x150mm ND Soft Edge Grad 0.3 (1 Stop) | Balance bright skies with the foreground
The key difference from a plain neutral-density filter is its graduated effect: it darkens part of the frame while leaving the rest clearer. That makes it useful when a bright sky is pushing the exposure away from the landscape below. I’d recommend it to landscape photographers who want to retain detail in both areas without making the whole image darker. It’s particularly well suited to scenes with a fairly clear division between sky and land, such as a coastline or open field; the soft transition also gives you room to work with less even horizons. Position the darker area over the bright part of the scene, then compose and meter with the whole image in mind. The result is a more balanced exposure in-camera, rather than relying on heavy shadow or highlight corrections later. It’s a restrained tool for controlling contrast, not a substitute for choosing the right framing and exposure.
Specialist Note
0.3 means one stop of light reduction, so this grad is a measured correction rather than a dramatic darkening of the sky. For example, if your exposure is 1/125 sec, one stop lets you use about 1/60 sec at the same aperture and ISO. The 100x150mm format gives you room to position the gradient against the horizon, and the soft edge is helpful when that line is broken by hills or buildings. I’d use it for a bright sky over a landscape, or to bring a luminous cloud band closer to the foreground’s exposure. Keep in mind that one stop won’t bridge every extreme brightness gap; it’s best when the difference is moderate.
