Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 100x150mm ND Soft Edge Grad 0.6 (2 Stops)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 100x150mm ND Soft Edge Grad 0.6 (2 Stops) | Balance bright skies with the landscape
Without a graduated filter, balancing a bright sky against darker land can mean losing detail in one or the other. This Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra is a rectangular neutral density graduated filter that reduces light across part of the frame, helping bring the sky and foreground closer together in a single exposure. Its 0.6 density gives a two-stop reduction, while the soft-edge transition is suited to scenes where the change in brightness isn’t a perfectly straight, hard boundary. It’s useful for landscape photographers working with bright skies, and for scenes such as a coastline or open countryside where you want to retain sky detail without making the land too dark. The gradual transition gives you room to position the effect around the horizon, rather than applying the same reduction across the whole image.
Using the graduated filter
Think of this filter as a way to manage contrast at capture, not as a fix for every difficult exposure. Place the darker part over the brighter area and align the transition with the change in the scene; with an uneven skyline, position it carefully so the reduction doesn’t darken features that rise into the sky. A graduated filter can’t selectively follow a complicated outline, so scenes with buildings, trees or mountains crossing the horizon may need a different approach. For a relatively clear horizon and a modest brightness difference, though, the soft edge can make the transition less obvious in the finished image.
Specialist Note
For a landscape with a bright sky, I’d begin by aligning the 0.6 transition with the horizon and checking that it doesn’t cut across a hill or building. The two-stop reduction is a measured correction: for example, a metered 1/125s exposure becomes about 1/30s in the filtered area if aperture and ISO stay fixed. Its 100x150mm format gives you room to position that transition where the scene needs it, rather than fixing it to the middle of the frame. I’d recommend it to landscape photographers facing a fairly clean horizon; the fixed two-stop strength can be too little for a very bright sky.
