Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 100x150mm ND Soft Edge Grad 0.9 (3 Stops)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 100x150mm ND Soft Edge Grad 0.9 (3 Stops) | Balance bright skies and darker foregrounds
Bring a bright sky and a darker landscape closer together in one exposure, rather than letting one part of the scene lose detail. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 100x150mm ND Soft Edge Grad 0.9 is a graduated neutral-density filter: its darkening effect transitions softly across the frame, so you can place it over the brighter area while keeping the foreground lighter. It suits landscape photographers who want to manage contrast at capture, especially when the skyline isn’t a perfectly straight line. The soft transition makes it a natural fit for scenes where a harder boundary could look abrupt. Its 0.9 density reduces light by three stops in the darker part of the filter. That’s a defined amount of control, useful when the sky is noticeably brighter than the land, though a particularly large brightness difference may call for a different approach.
Getting the gradient in the right place
Position the transition to follow the division between the bright sky and the land, then check the whole frame for an unnatural band of darkening. With an uneven skyline, the soft edge can help the change look gradual, but it still affects everything behind that part of the filter. Take care around tall buildings, trees or mountain peaks that rise into the sky: they may also be darkened. This filter is most helpful when the bright area is broad and the transition can sit across a reasonably open part of the scene.
Specialist Note
New users often line a graduated filter up with the horizon too quickly, then find that a hill or tree gets darkened along with the sky. With this soft-edge grad, take a moment to place the transition across the skyline and review those taller shapes before you settle on the composition. The 100x150mm format gives you room to position the gradient across the frame; the three-stop reduction is a substantial cut for a bright sky against darker land. It suits landscape photographers working with that kind of contrast. For a very uneven scene, though, a filter can’t selectively protect every object crossing the transition.
