Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 100x150mm ND Soft Edge Grad 1.2 (4 Stops)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 100x150mm ND Soft Edge Grad 1.2 (4 Stops) | Balance bright skies without darkening the land
Without a graduated ND filter, a bright sky can force you to choose between holding detail in the clouds and keeping the land properly exposed. This Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra soft-edge grad reduces light across part of the frame, helping bring a bright sky and darker foreground closer together in one exposure. Its 1.2 strength cuts four stops, making it useful when the sky is substantially brighter than the scene below. The soft transition is suited to horizons that aren’t perfectly straight, such as a landscape with hills or buildings meeting the sky. At 100x150mm, it gives you a generous filter area to position that transition where the scene needs it. It’s aimed at landscape photographers who want to manage contrast in-camera, rather than relying solely on adjustments after the shoot. A graduated filter can’t separate the sky from objects that rise into it, so placement matters.
Specialist Note
Is the 1.2 strength too much for a bright sky? It’s a four-stop reduction, so I’d reach for it when the sky is clearly overpowering the foreground, rather than for every overcast scene. The soft edge helps the transition blend across a less regular horizon; place it around the skyline, then check that a ridge or building hasn’t picked up too much density. The 100x150mm format gives you room to position the grad across the composition. It suits landscape work such as a bright coastal sky above darker land. One limitation to keep in mind: trees or other details extending into the sky may also be darkened.
