Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 100x150mm ND Soft Edge Grad 1.5 (5 Stops)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 100x150mm ND Soft Edge Grad 1.5 (5 Stops) | Balance bright skies with a gentle transition
The soft-edge graduation is the key difference here: it lets you reduce light across a bright part of the scene while keeping the change gradual rather than abrupt. That makes this rectangular ND filter particularly useful for landscape photographers working with a horizon that isn’t perfectly straight, such as a skyline or distant hills. It can help bring a bright sky closer in exposure to the land below, while retaining detail in both. The 1.5 density gives five stops of light reduction where the filter covers the image, so it’s suited to scenes with a substantial brightness difference rather than a subtle tweak. The 100x150mm format gives you room to position the transition within the frame. If you want to control sky brightness at capture, instead of relying entirely on editing later, this is a practical tool to consider.
Balancing the scene
A graduated ND filter darkens only part of the frame. Place its transition around the horizon, then adjust its position to suit the scene. The soft edge is helpful when the boundary between bright and darker areas isn’t a clean, level line. Five stops is a strong reduction, so consider how much of the scene needs filtering before positioning it.
Specialist Note
First-time users of graduated filters can try to darken the whole scene when the problem is really just a bright sky; this filter lets you target that brighter area instead. Its soft transition is helpful with uneven horizons, where a hard line could look out of place. The 100x150mm rectangle gives you room to place that transition where it suits the composition. For a bright sky over a darker landscape, position the grad across the horizon; the five-stop reduction can also make a longer exposure possible—for example, 1/30 sec becomes about 1 sec where the filter covers the image. It suits landscape photographers who want to balance exposure in-camera, though five stops may be more than you need for a mild contrast difference.
