Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 100x150mm ND Soft Edge Reverse Grad 0.3 (1 Stop)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 100x150mm ND Soft Edge Reverse Grad 0.3 (1 Stop) | Balance a bright horizon gently
To keep a bright horizon from washing out while retaining detail in a darker foreground, a reverse graduated ND filter can help balance the exposure in-camera. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 100x150mm ND Soft Edge Reverse Grad 0.3 (1 Stop) is a rectangular 100 x 150 mm filter with a soft-edge reverse graduation and a one-stop reduction. Its stronger area is designed to sit over the bright horizon, with a softer transition toward the upper part of the frame. That makes it particularly suited to sunrise and sunset scenes, when a narrow band near the horizon can be brighter than the land or water below. It’s aimed at landscape photographers who want to retain detail across sky and foreground in one exposure. The one-stop reduction is restrained, so it suits moderate contrast; it won’t by itself tame every extreme difference in brightness.
Specialist Note
A bright sunset strip can lose detail before the rest of the landscape is properly exposed; this filter puts its stronger reduction where that strip usually sits. The reverse graduation is the detail that makes it specific: align the denser band with the horizon, then let the soft transition extend into the sky for a gentler change. At one stop, it’s a measured correction, so I’d use it when the horizon is brighter than the foreground but the difference isn’t extreme. The 100 x 150 mm rectangular format gives you room to place that transition in the frame, which helps when the horizon sits above or below centre. It suits landscape photographers working around dawn or dusk, especially with a fairly level horizon.
