Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 100x150mm ND Soft Edge Reverse Grad 0.9 (3 Stops)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 100x150mm ND Soft Edge Reverse Grad 0.9 (3 Stops) | Balance bright horizons in-camera
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 100x150mm ND Soft Edge Reverse Grad 0.9 (3 Stops) uses a reverse graduated ND design, made for photographers who frame a bright horizon against a darker foreground. It’s particularly suited to landscapes at sunrise or sunset, when the strongest light sits near the horizon and a standard graduated filter may darken more sky than you need. Place the darker part of the filter over that bright band, then compose the transition to follow the horizon. This lets you reduce the brightness difference in the scene before capture, rather than relying on recovering every highlight later. It’s a considered tool for landscape work where the sky and land need different exposure treatment, especially with a low sun close to the skyline. The graduated effect does mean it’s less suited to scenes where bright areas fill the whole frame.
Specialist Note
Photographers working with a low sun over a shoreline or open field are the people I’d point toward this filter. Its 0.9 density gives three stops of reduction, so I’d position the darkest band over the bright horizon and check that the foreground still reads as intended. The soft edge gives you a gentler transition to place across that boundary; keep it aligned carefully if the horizon is clean, and watch for tall buildings or trees crossing it. I like the reverse-grad idea for that narrow strip of intense light, but it won’t correct a scene whose brightest area lies across the entire sky.
