Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 105mm Neutral Density 2.4 (8 Stops)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 105mm Neutral Density 2.4 (8 Stops) | Longer exposures in bright light
On a bright day, you may want flowing water to blur gently rather than freeze into separate droplets. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra Neutral Density filter reduces the light reaching your lens, making longer shutter speeds possible without relying on a very small aperture. It’s a specialist tool for landscape photographers and anyone shaping motion in a scene with a long exposure. The 105mm size tells you this is a large-format filter; the exact holder or lens compatibility depends on your setup. Its neutral density rating is intended to reduce light without adding a creative colour effect, so it can help keep the exposure under control while you choose the shutter speed that suits the subject. Use it for moving water, cloud movement or other scenes where a slower shutter is the point. It’s a focused tool rather than an everyday protection filter, and the benefit is greatest when you have a clear reason to lengthen the exposure.
Specialist Note
The Firecrest Ultra 105mm ND 2.4 is made for slowing the shutter when bright conditions would otherwise force you to stop down heavily. Its eight-stop reduction gives you meaningful control: for example, a metered 1/250 sec exposure can become about 1 sec at the same aperture and ISO, which can soften moving water. The 105mm format is substantial, so I’d match it to a setup already designed to take filters of that size rather than assume it fits a standard small filter thread. It suits landscape work where you want motion blur while keeping your chosen aperture. Just remember that an eight-stop filter calls for careful exposure and composition.
