Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 127mm Neutral Density 1.2 (4 Stops)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 127mm Neutral Density 1.2 (4 Stops) | Controlled light for longer exposures
The Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra is specified as ND 1.2, a practical level of light reduction when a scene is brighter than the exposure you want. A neutral-density filter lets you lengthen shutter time or choose a wider aperture while keeping exposure under control; which adjustment helps most depends on your subject and the look you’re after. It suits landscape photographers who want moving water or clouds to register as a softer blur, and anyone aiming for shallow depth of field in strong daylight. The 127mm size makes your existing filter setup the key consideration: make sure it’s designed to accept a filter of this size. This is a focused tool for managing incoming light, rather than a general-purpose protective filter. If you want to change exposure without changing your chosen aperture or shutter speed, this isn’t the filter for that approach.
Specialist Note
Four stops means you can use an exposure sixteen times longer while keeping the same aperture and ISO. For example, a meter reading of 1/250 sec becomes roughly 1/15 sec, which can turn flowing water into a smoother blur without changing your framing. I’d recommend it to landscape photographers who want that effect, or to someone shooting in bright daylight who needs a wider aperture. The 127mm size is a real constraint: it only makes sense if your filter holder accepts that size. If it does, this density gives you a clear, specific way to manage excess light; it won’t replace a different density when the scene calls for a smaller adjustment.
