Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 46mm Neutral Density 1.8 (6 Stops)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 46mm Neutral Density 1.8 (6 Stops) | Longer exposures in bright conditions
On a bright day, a waterfall or a busy street can look frozen when you’d rather show movement. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra is a neutral-density filter that reduces the light reaching your camera, making longer shutter speeds possible without changing the scene’s lighting. It suits landscape photographers and anyone who wants deliberate motion blur, as well as photographers who want to use a wider aperture in strong daylight. Its job is to give you more control over exposure when the available light would otherwise push you toward a faster shutter or a smaller aperture. Use it to soften flowing water, stretch cloud movement, or bring motion into a street scene. It’s a focused tool for shaping exposure, rather than a general protective filter.
Specialist Note
The Firecrest Ultra lets you use a slower shutter in bright light without stopping the lens down to its smallest aperture. The 46mm size is for a lens with a matching filter diameter, so check the marking on the lens before choosing it. Its six-stop reduction has a clear effect: at the same aperture and ISO, a 1/60 sec exposure becomes roughly 1 sec. That’s a useful starting point for giving moving water a softer look; keep the camera steady on a tripod while the shutter is open. I’d also use it to retain a wide aperture outdoors. Six stops is a fixed amount, though, so it may be more reduction than you want as the light fades.
