Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 55mm Neutral Density 1.5 (5 Stops)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 55mm Neutral Density 1.5 (5 Stops) | Gain five stops for longer exposures
The defining feature of this Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra filter is its five-stop neutral density: it cuts the light reaching your camera, giving you room to use a slower shutter speed in bright conditions. That makes it a practical option for photographers who want movement in a scene to register as a soft blur, or who need to manage exposure without changing their chosen aperture. The 55mm size is relevant when matching the filter to a lens with a corresponding filter fitting. A five-stop reduction is a substantial, fixed amount, so it’s best suited to situations where that level of light control makes sense rather than scenes that call for only a small adjustment. If you enjoy working with deliberate shutter speeds—at a river, beside the sea, or in a bright urban scene—this filter gives you a specific, predictable reduction to plan around.
Specialist Note
New ND-filter users often expect the filter to create motion blur by itself; it’s the slower shutter speed you choose after fitting it that does the work. This one takes away five stops, so a reading of 1/1000s can become roughly 1/30s at the same aperture and ISO. That’s a useful starting point for softening moving water or showing motion in passing traffic. The 55mm size means you’ll need a lens with a matching filter fitting. I’d suggest metering your scene first, then applying the five-stop change and checking the resulting exposure. It’s a fixed-strength filter, so it won’t give you a variable amount of reduction as light changes.
