Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 58mm Neutral Density 4.8 (16 Stop)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 58mm Neutral Density 4.8 (16 Stop) | Create dramatic long exposures
Moving water can blur into silky ribbons, and clouds can leave a sense of motion across the frame instead of appearing frozen. This Formatt Hitech neutral density filter reduces the light entering your lens, giving you room to use a much slower shutter speed in bright conditions. It suits landscape photographers and anyone who wants deliberate motion blur without changing the look of a scene through aperture alone. The strong reduction in light makes it particularly useful when a standard exposure would otherwise be too fast for the effect you want. Think flowing rivers, waterfalls or cloud movement over a landscape. It’s a focused tool for shaping exposure, rather than a filter you’d usually leave on for everyday photography. If long exposures are part of your creative approach, this gives you a substantial amount of light reduction to work with.
Specialist Note
People new to a very strong ND filter often expect a small exposure adjustment; this one is made for a dramatic change in shutter time. Its 16-stop reduction can turn a 1/1000 sec exposure into roughly 65 seconds, keeping aperture and ISO the same. That’s a practical route to soft water or cloud trails in daylight: meter the scene first, then add the filter and lengthen the exposure by 16 stops. The 58mm size is for a lens with a matching filter thread, so it’s worth checking that detail on the lens. Its 4.8 density is very strong, which is useful for extended exposures but less suited to quick, casual shooting.
