Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 95mm Neutral Density 3.9 (13 Stop)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 95mm Neutral Density 3.9 (13 Stop) | Create long exposures in bright light
Water can turn silky and moving clouds can soften into streaks, even when the scene is bright. This Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra neutral density filter cuts the light reaching your camera, giving you room to use a slower shutter speed in daylight. It suits landscape photographers and anyone who wants to show movement over time rather than freeze every detail. Try it on a flowing river, surf or a cloud-filled sky: take a reading without the filter, then lengthen the exposure to bring out the motion. The same light reduction can also help you keep a wider aperture in bright conditions, though long exposures call for a steady camera and a little planning. It’s a specialist-strength filter, best suited to deliberate work where controlling exposure matters more than reacting quickly to a changing scene.
Specialist Note
First-time users often underestimate how much a dense ND filter changes the exposure, then find their planned shutter speed is far longer than expected. This one’s 3.9 density means a 13-stop reduction: as a guide, a metered 1/125 second becomes about 65 seconds, so set up and focus before fitting the filter and use a timer or remote release. The 95mm size is the measurement to match to your filter setup, so check that before building your kit around it. I’d recommend it to landscape photographers aiming for softened surf or cloud movement. The trade-off is simple: those long exposures need a stable camera and time to work carefully.
