Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 95mm Neutral Density 6.6 (22 Stop)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 95mm Neutral Density 6.6 (22 Stop) | Turn daylight into long exposures
When a bright riverside scene looks too lively for the soft, flowing water you want, a strong neutral density filter can make the difference. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra cuts the light reaching your lens, letting you use a much slower shutter speed in conditions where the unfiltered exposure would be too short. Its 6.6 density rating is equivalent to 22 stops, making it suited to deliberate long exposures rather than everyday light reduction. Use it to blur moving water, clouds or other motion while keeping stationary parts of the scene defined. It’s aimed at photographers who want that effect in daylight and are comfortable planning an exposure before they shoot. For a moving subject you want sharp, this is the wrong tool: its purpose is to let movement build up as blur across the exposure.
Planning a long exposure
Take a meter reading without the filter, then extend the shutter time by 22 stops. As a guide, a base exposure of 1/4000 sec becomes roughly 17 minutes and 29 seconds. That’s a theoretical calculation, so allow for the scene and your camera’s exposure behaviour. A remote release or a timer can help avoid disturbing the camera during a long exposure.
Specialist Note
This filter can turn a bright daytime scene into a long exposure without stacking several weaker filters. The 95mm size is for a lens with a matching 95mm filter thread, so it’s worth thinking about which lens you’ll use it on before building your setup around it. For a still seascape, meter first, fit the filter, then extend the shutter time to soften the movement of the water. It suits photographers who enjoy planning a frame and waiting for a deliberate result. One honest point: with a 22-stop reduction, exposures can become extremely long when the light is already low.
