Formatt Hitech Onyx ND 85mm Seascape 0.9 Soft 0.9 Hard 1.8 Std Holder | Balance bright skies and water

Formatt Hitech Onyx ND 85mm Seascape 0.9 Soft 0.9 Hard 1.8 Std Holder combines two 0.9 graduated ND filters with a standard 1.8 ND option in an 85mm format. It’s aimed at landscape photographers who work along the coast and want more control over bright skies and longer exposures. The soft and hard versions of the 0.9 filter give you different transitions for balancing a bright sky against darker land or sea; the 1.8 option provides stronger light reduction across the scene. That range makes the set especially relevant for seascapes, where you may want to hold detail in the sky, smooth moving water, or work through changing daylight. Density 0.9 reduces light by three stops, while 1.8 reduces it by six. The graduated options are for uneven brightness across the frame; the standard ND is for reducing light throughout. It’s a focused set for deliberate exposure control, rather than a general-purpose collection of filter types.

Choosing a filter for the scene

Start by deciding whether the brightness problem is limited to part of the frame. A graduated ND can help balance a brighter sky with a darker foreground, while a standard ND reduces light across the whole image. For a longer exposure, meter the scene first, then account for the filter density when setting your shutter speed. The amount of blur will depend on the light and your chosen exposure, so treat those decisions as part of the composition—not as a fixed recipe.

Specialist Note

At low tide, with a bright strip of sky above dark wet sand, this is the sort of set that earns its place in a seascape bag. I’d use the 0.9 soft graduation where the skyline or distant land isn’t a clean straight boundary; its gentler transition is less conspicuous across that uneven edge. The 0.9 hard option is better when the horizon is clearly defined. The 85mm designation is worth matching to your existing filter setup before you plan a shoot, and the standard holder gives you a way to position a graduated transition over the bright area. This suits landscape photographers who like to shape exposure in-camera. For strongly irregular coastlines, a hard edge can be tricky to place neatly.
