Formatt Hitech Onyx ND 85x110mm Neutral Density Hard Edge Grad 0.6 (2 Stops)
Formatt Hitech Onyx ND 85x110mm Neutral Density Hard Edge Grad 0.6 (2 Stops) | Tame bright skies at the horizon
The defining feature of this Formatt Hitech Onyx filter is its hard-edged graduation: it reduces light by two stops across one part of the frame, with a distinct transition to the clear area. That makes it especially useful when a bright sky meets a relatively even, open horizon, such as at the coast or across flat countryside. It suits landscape photographers who want to hold detail in the sky without darkening the whole scene as much as a full neutral-density filter would. The 0.6 density gives a measured two-stop reduction, so you can work with a clear, repeatable amount of light control rather than an unspecified darkening effect. A hard edge is less forgiving when buildings, hills or trees break across the horizon; the transition can show there. For a clean skyline, though, this is the focused tool for balancing sky and land in the same exposure.
Specialist Note
First-time users often put the graduation across a jagged skyline, then wonder why the edge looks obvious. This hard-edge version is easier to place where the horizon is clean: align the transition with the sea line or a flat field, and let the darker part cover the bright sky. Its 0.6 rating means two stops of light reduction, which gives you a useful, defined correction when the sky is outshining the foreground. The 85 x 110 mm format is also a practical detail to factor into how you carry and position the filter. I’d steer landscape shooters toward it for open coastlines and level horizons; for a broken tree line, a softer transition is usually more forgiving.
