Formatt Hitech Onyx ND 85x110mm Neutral Density Soft Edge Grad 0.6 (2 Stops)
Formatt Hitech Onyx ND 85x110mm Neutral Density Soft Edge Grad 0.6 (2 Stops) | Balance bright skies by two stops
Formatt Hitech Onyx ND 85x110mm Neutral Density Soft Edge Grad 0.6 (2 Stops) reduces light across part of the frame by two stops. It’s made for landscape photographers who want more control over the difference between a bright sky and a darker foreground. Align the graduated area with the bright part of the scene, and you can bring those exposure levels closer together without darkening the whole image equally. The soft-edge transition is suited to gradual changes in brightness, such as a fairly level horizon. That makes this filter especially useful for open landscapes, coastlines and similar scenes where the sky is brighter than the land or water below it. It gives you a straightforward way to manage that contrast in-camera, rather than accepting a washed-out sky or a foreground that’s too dark.
Specialist Note
Positioning the transition is the part to take your time over; once it follows a level horizon, the darker area can temper the sky while the foreground stays more open. The 85x110mm format gives you a defined area to move across the frame, so check its placement against the actual horizon before making your exposure. I’d consider it for a coastal view or a broad field under a bright sky. With a broken treeline or tall buildings, the graduated area can darken their tops too, so this style is less suited to an uneven skyline. It’s a considered tool for scenes with a clear boundary.
