It’s suited to landscape photographers dealing with a clear difference in brightness between sky and ground, especially when they want to keep detail in both without relying on a graduated effect in post-processing. Position the transition around the boundary between the bright and darker areas, then adjust its placement to suit the scene. The effect is most straightforward when that boundary is fairly level; an uneven skyline can make a graduated filter harder to place without darkening parts of the subject.
