GREEN.L MC-CPL 86mm
GREEN.L MC-CPL 86mm | Reduce reflections and deepen skies
Without a polarizing filter, reflections can wash across water, glass and glossy leaves, while a bright sky may look less rich than it did to the eye. The GREEN.L MC-CPL 86mm is a polarizing filter for photographers who want more control over those effects in-camera, rather than relying on edits afterwards. It can reduce reflections on non-metallic surfaces and deepen blue skies, with the result depending on your angle to the light. That makes it useful for landscapes, waterside scenes and photographs through windows. The 86mm size is intended for a lens with a matching filter thread, so it’s important that the lens accepts this size. A polarizer also reduces the light reaching the camera, so you may need a slower shutter speed or a higher ISO in dim conditions. Its strongest use is outdoors in good light, when you can adjust your position and see the effect change as you compose.
Specialist Note
A polarizer can cost you some light, so it’s less appealing when you’re already working in dim conditions; in bright daylight, its control over reflections is precisely why I’d consider it. The 86mm size makes the key question simple: your lens needs an 86mm filter thread. For water, turn the filter while looking at the reflection and settle on the amount of glare you want to keep or suppress. For a landscape, try it with the sun off to one side to deepen the sky, then adjust the framing and filter position until the effect looks natural. I’d recommend it to someone who wants to manage reflections as they take the photograph, especially in outdoor scenes.
