Its reverse gradient places the stronger density around that area, helping bring the sky’s brightness closer to the foreground’s exposure in a single frame. That makes it especially relevant to landscape photographers working with low sun over a flat sea, open fields or distant ridgelines. You position the gradient to follow the horizon, then compose and expose for the scene you want to keep. It’s a focused tool rather than a general darkening filter: for a bright sky that fills the whole frame, a graduated filter may not be the right match. When the horizon is the challenge, though, the reverse layout is the point.
Specialist Note
For a sunrise over a level sea, I’d line the GND16 band up with the bright horizon first, then fine-tune the framing. The 16 designation corresponds to four stops of light reduction, so it can make a real difference when the sunlit strip is much brighter than the water below. Its 100 × 150 mm format gives you room to position that transition within the frame, rather than having it fixed at the centre of the lens. I’d recommend it to landscape photographers who often work at sunrise or sunset and want to balance a narrow bright horizon in one exposure.
