Laowa 15mm f/4.0 1X Wide Angle Macro Lens - 1:1 close-ups at 15mm

Close-up photography often leaves little room for the setting around a small subject. The Laowa 15mm f/4.0 1X Wide Angle Macro Lens combines 1:1 magnification with a 111° angle of view, so you can show fine detail and the surrounding scene together. It’s a specialist manual-focus lens for Sony FE cameras, particularly useful when a tight macro view would feel too isolated. Photograph a flower with its leaves and habitat still in the frame, or make a close product image that shows an object in context rather than as a detail alone. The 1:1 reproduction ratio also records a subject at life size on the sensor, giving small natural details a strong presence. At 15mm, the perspective stays unusually wide for a macro lens; the 111° view on full-frame is a key part of that distinctive look. There’s also a vertical shift function for APS-C use, adding another option for adjusting the composition. This is a particular tool rather than an all-purpose autofocus lens: its appeal is the combination of a very close focusing range, wide view and life-size reproduction.

Optics and handling

  • 1:1 macro with infinity focus: The lens reaches life-size reproduction for close details, while retaining the ability to focus on distant subjects. That range makes it useful beyond dedicated tabletop macro work.
  • 12cm minimum focusing distance: Focus as close as 12cm to bring small details forward in the composition. With the wide angle of view, nearby subjects can remain visually connected to their surroundings.
  • 111° full-frame angle of view: The broad perspective includes more of the scene around a close subject. The listed angle for APS-C is 85°.
  • Vertical shift for APS-C: On APS-C cameras, the lens offers up to ±6mm of vertical shift. This gives you an adjustment for perspective when composing, without changing the camera’s position.
  • 12 elements in 9 groups: The optical construction includes one extra-low-dispersion element and three high-refractive elements. These are specific parts of the lens design for controlling the image formed across its wide view.
  • Multi-layer low-reflective coating: The coating is intended to reduce flare from reflected light within the lens. It’s useful when bright light enters the frame or comes from near the edge of the composition.
  • 14 aperture blades and 77mm filter thread: The 14-blade diaphragm shapes out-of-focus highlights, while the 77mm front thread accepts filters of that size. Both details matter when you’re planning the look and setup of a shot.

Specialist Note

“Is the Laowa 15mm f/4.0 1X a lens for precise close-ups?” Yes, provided you’re happy to focus manually. At macro distances, I’d work slowly and move the camera a little to place the sharp plane exactly where I want it; that control matters when a small change in position alters the detail that reads clearly. The f/4 maximum aperture is a sensible point to keep in mind when light is low, so I’d plan on adding light or using a stable setup for close product work. Its metal construction gives it a solid, deliberate character, rather than the feel of a lightweight autofocus lens. I particularly like the idea of using it on a small nature subject: get close, then keep enough of the surroundings in view to give the detail context. It’s a specialist lens, and manual focus is part of the deal.”

On your camera

This version has a Sony FE mount and covers the full-frame sensor format. It can also be used on Sony APS-C bodies; there, the 15mm focal length gives an angle of view comparable to a 22.5mm lens on full-frame, using the 1.5× crop factor. The listed APS-C angle of view is 85°. The shift function is specifically described for APS-C use, with up to ±6mm of vertical movement.
