It suits Leica L photographers who want a dedicated prime for people rather than an all-purpose zoom. One practical consideration: 85mm framing needs a little working distance, so it’s less comfortable in cramped interiors than a wider lens.

Specialist Note

At 85mm, I’d use this for a head-and-shoulders portrait from a few steps back, keeping the camera level and opening to f/1.8 when I want the background to recede. That wide maximum aperture is also handy at an indoor event: it gives you more light to work with, though I’d still watch shutter speed when people are moving. Autofocus makes it easier to follow changing expressions without taking your eye off the moment. I’d recommend it to a Leica L user who mainly photographs people and has room to step back.
