Meyer Optik Görlitz Biotar 58mm f/1.5 II Canon RF-Mount
Meyer Optik Görlitz Biotar 58mm f/1.5 II Canon RF-Mount | A bright prime for expressive portraits
The defining choice here is the f/1.5 maximum aperture: it gives this 58mm standard prime plenty of room to work with available light and to separate a portrait subject from the background. Meyer Optik Görlitz pairs that bright aperture with a focal length suited to portraiture, making this lens a considered option for Canon RF photographers who want to work deliberately rather than rely on autofocus. Manual focusing asks you to take your time, which can be rewarding for posed portraits, still life and other subjects that stay put long enough for precise adjustment. At f/1.5, focus is selective, so careful placement matters; stop down when you want more of the subject in focus. It’s a specialist lens for photographers who enjoy setting focus themselves and shaping a picture with aperture. If you prefer fast, hands-off focusing, this is less likely to suit your routine.
Specialist Note
Portrait photographers who like working at a measured pace are the people I’d point towards this Biotar. At f/1.5, you can keep the aperture wide for a softly separated portrait, but take care to focus on the nearer eye: the zone in focus is narrow. The 58mm focal length gives you room to make a close portrait without choosing a long telephoto perspective. On a Canon RF-S body, its framing is equivalent to about 93mm on full frame, which can suit head-and-shoulders work; step back a little and focus manually with care. I’d choose it for posed portraits or thoughtful still-life compositions. Its manual focus is a real commitment, so it won’t suit every fast-moving subject.
