Wide scenes can be frustrating when you can’t step back far enough to fit them into the frame. This autofocus zoom gives Micro Four Thirds photographers room to take in broad landscapes, architectural interiors and night skies, while still letting them adjust their framing without changing lenses. Its 7–14mm range is especially useful when the scene feels bigger than the space you have to photograph it. On a Micro Four Thirds body, that framing corresponds to 14–28mm on a full-frame camera. The constant maximum aperture of f/2.8 is a practical help when light is limited, including for astro work. It’s a specialist wide-angle lens for photographers who enjoy working close to a scene and composing carefully; at the widest end, small changes in framing can have a noticeable effect on what sits at the edges.

Specialist Note

At 7mm, I’d start with a landscape that has a strong foreground and keep the camera level; that very broad view can make a nearby rock or path lead the eye through the frame. For architecture, I’d use the zoom to refine the composition from where I’m standing rather than forcing every line into the widest setting. The f/2.8 maximum aperture is useful for night-sky compositions, where gathering more light matters. This lens suits Micro Four Thirds photographers who deliberately want an expansive view. One thing to bear in mind: the widest setting can exaggerate the edges, so leave a little breathing room around important details.
