Rycote Hi Wind Cover 9
Rycote Hi Wind Cover 9 | A microphone cover for windy recording conditions
Wind hitting a microphone can make speech and other recordings harder to use. The Rycote Hi Wind Cover 9 is a microphone accessory intended to help address that problem: it’s a cover for recording situations where wind is a concern. It suits people who record spoken audio or ambient sound and want a dedicated wind cover in their kit, rather than trying to solve the issue later in editing. Its purpose is specific, so it makes most sense when wind is the distraction you’re trying to manage. Use it as part of your microphone setup when recording outdoors or in other exposed conditions. The product name identifies it as the Hi Wind Cover 9; beyond that, the information available doesn’t establish particular microphone fit or construction details, so I wouldn’t assume those from the name alone.
For an outdoor interview, the aim is to keep wind from interfering with the words you’ve recorded. For ambience, it’s about making the microphone setup more suitable for working in breezy surroundings. A cover addresses wind at the microphone; it won’t remove unrelated sounds such as nearby traffic or room echo. Think of it as a focused accessory for one recording problem, not a substitute for choosing a quieter position or monitoring the sound as you record.
Specialist Note
One limit to bear in mind: a wind cover won’t make a noisy location quiet, so you’ll still want to pay attention to where you record. I’d consider the Hi Wind Cover 9 when wind is the particular nuisance and you need a microphone accessory with that job in mind. Rycote is the brand name to look for, while “9” helps distinguish this specific cover when you’re organising or asking about your kit. It suits people recording speech outdoors, or capturing ambient sound in breezy places. Use it as a wind cover in your microphone setup, then listen back to judge whether the location is still getting in the way.
