Rycote SC-08 Stereo Pair Super Cardioid Microphone
Rycote SC-08 Stereo Pair Super Cardioid Microphone | Directional stereo recording
For recording a sound source in stereo while keeping the microphones directional, the Rycote SC-08 Stereo Pair Super Cardioid Microphone offers a two-microphone setup with a supercardioid pickup pattern. It suits sound recordists and musicians working with sources such as an acoustic ensemble or a choir, where you want a sense of left-to-right space as well as a focused recording. The stereo pair gives you two microphones to position for that perspective; the supercardioid pattern makes aiming them at the intended sound part of the setup. That combination is most useful when the source has a clear position and you can choose where the microphones point. It’s a specific tool for directional stereo capture, rather than a general-purpose description of every recording situation. Plan the placement around the sound you want to feature, and listen to the result before settling on it.
Specialist Note
The two-microphone arrangement makes placement a real part of the recording: it lets you build a stereo perspective, but you’ll need to decide how wide that perspective should feel. I’d consider the SC-08 pair for an acoustic ensemble or choir rehearsal, aiming both supercardioid microphones toward the performers and adjusting their positions while listening for a natural left-right balance. For a focused stereo recording of a single source, keep the pair directed at that source rather than treating the microphones as room coverage. The honest trade-off is that directional pickup rewards careful aiming; this pair suits you best when you have time to position and listen, not when you need a set-and-forget approach.
