Tokina Cinema 85mm T1.5 (EF)
Tokina Cinema 85mm T1.5 (EF) | A focused look for film and video
Tokina Cinema 85mm T1.5 (EF) is a short-telephoto prime with a bright T1.5 maximum aperture, made for filmmakers who want deliberate, controlled framing. It suits cinematographers and video creators working with Canon EF cameras, especially for scripted scenes, interviews and portrait-led footage where a tighter view helps keep attention on the subject. At 85mm, it gives faces and details a composed, close-up presence. The T1.5 rating gives you room to work when available light is limited and lets you choose a shallow-focus look when the scene calls for it. As an interchangeable manual-focus lens, it’s aimed at setups where focus is planned and adjusted by the operator rather than left to autofocus. Choose it for considered shots, rather than fast reframing on the fly.
Specialist Note
For filmmakers shooting interviews, dialogue scenes and close portraits, this 85mm gives you a tighter frame that can keep attention on a face. On a Canon APS-C (EF-S) body, the framing is equivalent to about 136mm, which can work well for a more intimate head-and-shoulders shot; allow room to step back, as that view can feel restrictive in a small room. The manual focus suits a measured approach: set your focus deliberately, then make a controlled adjustment as your subject moves. T1.5 is helpful when you want to work with less available light, though at that aperture accurate focusing matters. I’d pair it with a wider lens for scenes that need more of the room.
