Urth 39mm Ethereal 1/4 Diffusion Lens Filter (Plus+)
Urth 39mm Ethereal 1/4 Diffusion Lens Filter (Plus+) | Gentle highlight glow
Hard, crisp-looking light can make a portrait or a night scene feel harsher than it did in person. The Urth 39mm Ethereal 1/4 Diffusion Lens Filter is made to soften that rendering, adding a gentle glow around bright highlights while taking some edge off fine detail. Its 1/4 diffusion strength gives you a restrained effect to work with, rather than an obviously hazy look. It’s suited to photographers who want a softer, more atmospheric feel in portraits, video or scenes with practical lights, without adding that look in post-production. Use it when a bright window, lamp or street light is part of the frame and you’d like its light to feel less clinical. The effect depends on the scene and the light, so it won’t make every subject look the same. The 39mm size is for lenses with a matching filter thread.
Specialist Note
For a 39mm lens, I’d consider the Ethereal 1/4 when I want a little softness without losing the character of the scene. The 1/4 strength is a sensible place to start for portraits: work with a bright window near the subject and let the filter gently soften the highlights and fine detail. It can also suit evening frames with small points of light, such as lamps in the background, where a subtle glow adds atmosphere. I’d steer you elsewhere if your priority is maximum crispness across every detail; diffusion deliberately changes that clean rendering. It suits photographers who want the effect in-camera and prefer a light touch.
