At sunset, the brightest part of the sky often sits right along the horizon, while the land below is already losing detail. The H&Y K-Series Reverse GND is made for that tricky balance: its graduated neutral-density effect is strongest around the horizon and fades higher up, helping reduce the difference between bright sky and darker foreground. It’s suited to landscape photographers working with scenes where the horizon is the main exposure challenge, rather than a bright patch high in the sky. The ND0.9 rating corresponds to three stops of light reduction at its densest part. A magnetic frame is part of the product, and the filter is black. Use it when you want to retain more detail across a bright horizon without darkening the whole scene evenly. The transition needs to sit in the right place, so a fairly clear horizon gives the most natural-looking result.
Specialist Note
A bright horizon can leave you choosing between a washed-out sky and a foreground that’s too dark; this filter is designed to reduce that particular mismatch. ND0.9 gives three stops at the densest band: as a simple reference, 1/125 s becomes about 1/15 s there, while the graduated area has less effect away from the horizon. The magnetic frame suits photographers already working with a compatible magnetic filter setup, and makes positioning the filter part of the framing process. I’d consider it for sunset seascapes or open landscapes, aligning the strongest part of the gradient with the bright horizon. One caveat: a tall building or peak crossing that band can make the darkening look less even.
