B+W Black Mist 1/4 MRC Nano V-PRO 39mm
B+W Black Mist 1/4 MRC Nano V-PRO 39mm | Soft, cinematic highlights with gentle diffusion
Soft, blooming highlights bring a cinematic mood to portraits and night scenes while the rest of the frame retains its definition. The B+W Black Mist 1/4 MRC Nano V-PRO 39mm is a diffusion filter with a 39mm fitting and a 1/4 strength. It spreads light from bright areas into a gentle halo, adding a softer, dreamier character to lamps, window light and other highlights. The 1/4 grade gives a noticeable effect without being as pronounced as the 1/2 strength. Try it for a portrait with a bright source in the background, evening street photographs where lamps should bloom, or a carefully lit interview with a film-like softness. B+W combines optical glass with MRC Nano multicoating, specified to reduce reflections and provide high light transmission. The coating also repels water and dirt, a helpful detail when the filter needs cleaning between setups. This is a creative effect filter, not a neutral-density filter for controlling exposure.
Glass and coating
- Black Mist diffusion: The filter softens the way bright highlights render, producing a visible halo rather than a crisp edge around strong light sources. That character works especially well when a scene includes lamps or bright windows.
- 1/4 strength: This grade sits between the more subtle 1/8 and the stronger 1/2 versions. It brings a deliberate mist effect to the image while retaining a defined overall look.
- MRC Nano multicoating: The coating is intended to minimise reflections and maintain high light transmission. That matters when the frame includes bright points of light and you want to preserve a clear, contrasty picture.
- Water- and dirt-repellent surface: The coating resists water and dirt, so marks are less troublesome during a shoot and the glass is easier to clean.
- Optical glass and finished ring: Optical glass forms the image-making surface, held in a neatly finished filter ring. The ring gives the filter a clean, considered finish on the lens.
Specialist Note
The neatly finished ring gives this 39mm filter a clean, considered feel on a small-diameter lens, and the 1/4 strength is the version I’d look at for a visible mist effect that doesn’t dominate every highlight. For a portrait, place a bright window or lamp in the background to bring out the soft halo around it. For evening street scenes, include a few bright lights against darker surroundings for a more pronounced, cinematic contrast. The MRC Nano coating is a welcome detail when you’re working around rain or dusty locations. One thing to keep in mind: this is a fixed-strength effect, so choose 1/4 when that degree of diffusion suits the look you’re after.
