Freewell 82mm Threaded Hybrid Variable ND/CPL 3-7 Stop Filter
Freewell 82mm Threaded Hybrid Variable ND/CPL 3-7 Stop Filter | Two filter functions in one
The defining design choice is combining variable neutral density with a circular polariser, so you can adjust exposure and manage reflections with one filter. The ND function reduces the light reaching your camera; the CPL function can help control reflections from surfaces such as water or glass. That makes this filter relevant when you want more control over both exposure and reflected light without swapping between two separate filters. Its variable range runs from 3 to 7 stops, giving you room to make a moderate exposure adjustment or cut much more light when conditions call for it. It’s aimed at photographers and filmmakers who want to adjust exposure while keeping their composition in place, especially when working in bright light or making reflective surfaces part of the shot. The 82mm threaded format is for lenses with a matching filter thread.
Specialist Note
Exposure adjustment is the point here: the variable 3-7 stop range lets you adapt the light reduction without changing filters. For a simple example, if your correct exposure is 1/125 sec, adding 3 stops of ND brings that to about 1/15 sec at the same aperture and ISO; at 7 stops, it’s around 1 sec. That can help when you want movement to blur, or when bright conditions make a wider aperture difficult to use. The 82mm thread suits lenses with that filter-thread size, so it’s worth matching the filter to the lens you plan to use. I’d consider it for someone who wants ND and polarising effects together; if you need to adjust those effects independently, a separate filter setup may suit you better.
