GREEN.L 46mm HMC ND Fader Variable
GREEN.L 46mm HMC ND Fader Variable | Dial in less light
Bright daylight can leave you choosing between a wide aperture and a shutter speed that feels too fast for the motion you want. The GREEN.L 46mm HMC ND Fader Variable is a variable neutral-density filter: turn its adjustment to reduce the light reaching the lens, then set exposure around the look you want. That makes it useful for video, where you may want to retain a chosen shutter speed, and for stills when a longer exposure can soften moving water or clouds. Its 46mm size identifies the filter diameter, so it belongs on a lens with a matching 46mm filter thread. The product name also specifies HMC. For the day-to-day decision, though, its variable ND function is the key point: you can adjust light reduction rather than swap between fixed strengths. Use the exposure preview as you work, since the filter changes the light reaching the camera but doesn’t set your exposure for you.
Getting the result you want
For video, decide on the shutter speed that suits your motion first, then use the filter adjustment to bring exposure under control. For a still-life landscape, try a longer shutter speed to let moving water blur, checking the preview as you adjust. The filter gives you a way to reduce incoming light; your shutter and aperture choices shape the final look.
Specialist Note
It removes the need to keep interrupting a shot to exchange one fixed ND strength for another. On a lens with a 46mm filter thread, this filter’s matching size makes it a straightforward option to consider; the variable adjustment is what lets you fine-tune the light reduction as framing or daylight changes. I’d suggest it to someone filming outdoors or making longer exposures of moving water: set your intended shutter speed, then turn the fader while watching the exposure preview. One practical point: it controls incoming light, not shutter speed, so you’ll still need to choose the motion effect you want. The HMC designation is part of the product name, but I’d focus your buying decision on the adjustable ND function.
