7Artisans 35mm f/1.2 MkII Nikon Z-Mount | APS-C | A fast prime for street and travel

Without a fast prime, you may find yourself relying on higher ISO settings or passing up a shot as the light fades. The 7Artisans 35mm f/1.2 MkII is a manual-focus standard prime for Nikon Z APS-C cameras, suited to photographers who enjoy setting focus themselves and want a bright lens for street scenes and travel. Its 35mm focal length gives a 44° angle of view, a considered field of view for picking out a subject without making every frame feel wide. You can work with available light, or use the wide maximum aperture to draw attention to a nearby subject against a busier background. It’s a lens for a measured, hands-on way of shooting rather than quick autofocus. If you like taking time to frame and focus, it offers a distinct alternative to making the same pictures with a zoom.

Specialist Note

Manual focus is the compromise to accept here; the reason to choose this lens is its f/1.2 maximum aperture in a straightforward 35mm prime. On an APS-C Nikon Z body, that focal length frames like roughly 52.5mm on full frame, so it suits street details and travel portraits without an especially wide view. For a person in a lively street, try f/1.2 to separate them from the background, and give yourself a moment to focus carefully. For moving subjects, around 1/500s is a sensible starting point, then adjust to the light. I’d recommend it to someone who enjoys deliberate focusing; for fast, spontaneous action, manual focus may feel limiting.
