B+W 103 ND Gray 49 ES
B+W 103 ND Gray 49 ES | Create motion with longer exposures
Give moving water a soft, flowing look or keep a wider aperture in bright conditions by reducing the light reaching your camera. The B+W 103 ND Gray 49 ES is a neutral-density filter in the 49 size. It lets you use a slower shutter speed when the available light would otherwise call for a faster one, making it useful for scenes where you want motion to show in the image. It can also help you hold onto a wider aperture in daylight when you want a shallower depth of field. This filter suits photographers who want to make those exposure choices outdoors, especially when shooting water, clouds or other moving subjects. The result depends on the shutter speed and the movement in the scene: a longer exposure makes motion more visible, while a still subject remains sharp if focus is set carefully.
Specialist Note
For making moving water blur in daylight, the B+W 103 ND Gray 49 ES gives you a way to lengthen the exposure rather than relying on a very small aperture. Its ND-gray design reduces incoming light, so you can choose a slower shutter speed for a stream or fountain and let the moving water soften across the frame. The 49 size is the key practical detail when choosing this filter: it’s made for a lens with a matching 49 mm filter thread. I’d suggest supporting the camera for a longer exposure, then adjusting the shutter speed until the water has the amount of blur you want. Bear in mind that moving subjects will blur too, so this isn’t the tool for freezing action.
