B+W 106 Neutral Density Filter ND1.8 / +6 Diaph - 55mm
B+W 106 Neutral Density Filter ND1.8 / +6 Diaph - 55mm | Slow shutter speeds in bright light
The defining optical choice is the ND1.8 density: it reduces the light reaching your camera by six stops, so you can use a slower shutter speed or a wider aperture in bright conditions. That’s the point of this B+W neutral density filter—giving you more control over exposure when the available light would otherwise limit those settings. It suits photographers who want movement in a daylight scene, such as soft-looking water, or who want to work with a wider aperture outdoors. The 55mm size identifies the filter size, so match it to the filter size required by your lens. This is a straightforward, fixed-strength tool rather than a variable filter; its usefulness comes from knowing how much light it removes and planning your exposure around that.
Specialist Note
Photographers drawn to long exposures of streams, fountains or moving clouds will get a clear, practical use from this filter. With six stops of reduction, a shutter speed of 1/125 sec can become 1/2 sec at the same exposure, which is enough to render moving water with a much softer appearance. I’d start with the exposure you’d use without the filter, then lengthen the shutter speed by six stops and review the result. It can also help you keep a wider aperture in strong daylight. The fixed ND1.8 strength is substantial, though, so it suits bright scenes better than low-light work.
