B+W ND Graduated 50% Basic 58
B+W ND Graduated 50% Basic 58 | Balance bright skies and darker foregrounds
B+W ND Graduated 50% Basic 58 is a graduated neutral-density filter, with “50%” as its defining designation. It’s made for photographers who want to manage the difference in brightness between parts of a scene, especially in landscape compositions where the sky is much brighter than the land below it. By placing the graduated area over the brighter part of the frame, you can bring the exposure into better balance while keeping the darker area visible. That can help when you want to retain detail in a bright sky without letting a foreground become too dark. It suits careful, composed shooting, where you have time to position the transition to match the scene. The filter’s graduated effect is most useful when the bright and darker areas meet along a fairly clear line; a complicated skyline or uneven tree line can take more precise placement. It’s a focused tool for shaping exposure in-camera, rather than a general-purpose filter for every kind of photograph.
Specialist Note
Positioning is the part to take your time over: align the graduated area with the bright-to-dark boundary, then check the whole frame before taking the shot. The 58 size is useful to know when matching the filter to a lens’s filter thread, so you can make the fit decision directly from that measurement. As a graduated ND, this B+W is a natural fit for open landscapes with a defined skyline; place the darker portion over the sky to keep its brightness in check while exposing for the foreground. I’d be more cautious with a broken skyline, where the transition can cross buildings or trees. It rewards a composed frame rather than a rushed one.
