Caruba UV + CPL + ND8 Kit 77mm
Caruba UV + CPL + ND8 Kit 77mm: Handle reflections and bright light
The Caruba UV + CPL + ND8 Kit 77mm is a three-filter set for a lens with a 77mm filter thread. It’s aimed at outdoor photographers and video makers who need different ways to manage sunlight and reflections. The CPL addresses glare on windows and water, while the ND8 reduces incoming light for bright conditions and longer exposures. That makes the set useful for subjects ranging from reflective shopfronts to moving water in strong daylight. The UV filter has a different role: it addresses the bluish cast ultraviolet sunlight can add to daytime images, and covers the lens’s front element. Each filter has a multilayer coating, and the supplied pouch has space for four filters, leaving room for one more. The set brings three distinct filter effects together in a portable case, with a specific 77mm fit.
Filter effects outdoors
- UV filter: Ultraviolet sunlight can give daytime photographs a bluish cast; this filter is intended to correct it. It also provides a replaceable layer over the lens’s front element.
- Circular polarising filter: The CPL reduces reflections from surfaces such as glass and water. It also increases contrast and colour saturation, including the separation between blue sky and white clouds.
- ND8 filter: This neutral-density filter cuts the light reaching the camera. Use it in bright sun to work with a wider aperture or a longer shutter speed, such as for a softer rendering of moving water.
- Multilayer coating: The filters have a protective coating intended to make their surfaces easier to clean. That’s useful when filters are handled outdoors and pick up marks.
- Four-filter pouch: The case holds the three supplied filters and has a space for one more. It keeps them together and helps protect them from scratches during transport.
Specialist Note
At a bright pond, reflected sky can compete with the detail beneath the surface. I’d use the CPL to cut those reflections; it also brings more definition to the contrast between blue sky and white clouds. For a waterfall in strong daylight, the ND8 cuts incoming light so you can choose a longer shutter speed for smoother-looking water. This set suits outdoor photographers and video makers with a lens that has a 77mm filter thread. That size is also the main limitation: the filters won’t fit a lens with a different thread size.
