Cokin Filter Z121 Neutral Grey G2 (ND)8 (0.9)
Cokin Filter Z121 Neutral Grey G2 (ND)8 (0.9) | Control bright-light exposure
In strong daylight, a shutter speed can be too quick for the flowing-water look you want. The Cokin Filter Z121 Neutral Grey G2 (ND)8 (0.9) cuts the light reaching the camera, giving you room to use a slower shutter speed. Its ND8 rating corresponds to a three-stop reduction, while the 0.9 designation identifies its neutral-density strength. The grey colour is intended to reduce light without adding a colour tint to the scene. This filter suits photographers who want more control over exposure in bright conditions, especially when photographing moving water or other motion they want to render smoothly. It can also help when you want to use a wider aperture outdoors without letting in as much light. The main thing to plan for is the longer exposure: keep the camera steady to avoid unwanted movement in the rest of the frame.
Working with the light reduction
Use your camera’s meter to set an exposure without the filter, then account for the three-stop reduction. For example, a metered shutter speed of 1/8 second becomes about 1 second with the filter in place, assuming the same aperture and ISO. That longer exposure can soften moving water, while a tripod helps keep stationary parts of the scene sharp. The filter’s neutral-grey description points to its role: reducing light rather than adding a deliberate colour effect.
Specialist Note
The neutral-grey tint is the detail that matters here: it cuts incoming light without being intended as a colour effect, so the scene’s own colours remain the point. With the ND8 rating, you gain three stops to work with; for a stream metered at 1/8 second, that gives you roughly 1 second at the same aperture and ISO. I’d suggest this to someone who wants smoother water in daylight, or needs a wider aperture outdoors and can’t otherwise get the exposure they want. A tripod is a good partner for the slower shutter speeds. This filter won’t freeze motion; its value is in letting motion blur show.
